Frequently Asked Questions
from our guests
How do we get there?
A flight or self drive
18 On the Hill
We recommend booking a domestic flight from Johannesburg or Cape Town to the nearest airport, HDS (Hoedspruit Eastgate Airport)
and then an airport transfer +/- an hour to the lodge.
You are welcome to book road transfers or helicopter transfers (subject to availability and weather conditions) with us at an additional cost.
If you are arriving via self drive, please let us know and we are happy to provide a location pin, advice on which route to take and directions.

Are you wondering,
Do we have the Big 5?
Yes, we are located within the Balule, a Big 5 Nature Reserve, where the Big 5 and other wildlife roam freely between unfenced borders of neighbouring Greater Kruger reserves and the Kruger National Park.
Do you provide Binocs?

Yes, we do.
Each game vehicle is assigned a pair of binoculars. And we keep a pair available in the main area for guests to use in the lodge. We also sell a range of binoculars in our curio shop if our guests would like to purchase their own.

What should I pack?

We're family friendly
Are kids allowed on drives?
We welcome kids of all ages, and allow kids of all ages on game drives – subject to the guide and manager's discretion.
You can find our children policy on our rates page.
Although we are a family lodge, safety is important to us, and all adult guests with young kids are responsible for their children. Our rooms are raised above ground, and we are in a Big 5 area.

How many safaris can I expect?
Morning & Afternoon
We offer two game drives per night booked. For example, during a 3 night stay, guests can expect a total of 6 safaris, including on the afternoon of arrival and morning of departure.

When's is the best time?
Summer vs Winter
The Greater Kruger provides exceptional wildlife viewing throughout the year. Winter (May to September) generally provides excellent game viewing due to sparse vegetation, while summer (October to April) offers lush landscapes, newborn animals, and outstanding birdwatching.
Do the drives go into
the Kruger National Park?

No they do not
Our inclusive safaris are not drives into the Kruger National Park. If guests would like to do a day excursion into the park, it is possible through Phalaborwa or Orpen Gates. However, please note this is an additional cost, and unless you are with us for a long stay we do not recommend it as you miss your safaris here with us.
